That said, my leftfield underdog love isn’t enough for me to recommend this strange crossbreed. Yes, I wanted to like it, precisely because it’s an outlier, and because it’s a spin-off from a game that most people dislike, and because it’s an experiment from a developer who usually doesn’t dabble in This Sort Of Thing. There will be so many unwanted progeny spawned from the loins of the gaming industry this year, and this did not deserve to be neglected among them. As I sit here in the research crater – it’s dark now, and I’ve moved onto the brandy – I recall that I rather favoured the idea of Darkspore. There are reasons to avoid it entirely, and those are few too, but potent. There are other reasons to be indifferent to it, and they are numerous. There are some reasons to celebrate the arrival of Darkspore, but they are few. Wenn ich Erfolg hatte, freute ich mich wie ein kleines Kind über die coolen Items, die oft so mächtig waren, dass sie die Statuswerte meiner Helden direkt in neue Dimensionen katapultierten. Auf der anderen Seite ist es schier unglaublich, wie oft ich mich dabei erwischte, am Levelende aufs Ganze zu gehen und mich entgegen jeglicher Vernunft mit deutlich stärkeren Gegnern anzulegen, nur um die bestmögliche Belohnung herauszukitzeln. Die Dungeons wiederholen sich viel zu schnell, ähneln sich im Aufbau zu sehr und der Bezug zur Spielwelt fehlt genauso schmerzlich wie jegliche Charakterinteraktion oder Quests. Das gleichen auch die zahlreichen verschiedenen Helden nicht aus. Eine Charakterentwicklung im eigentlichen Sinne findet schlichtweg nicht statt. Dennoch kaschiert der Maxis-Titel seine Schwächen zu unbeholfen. Das Gameplay ist unkompliziert, eingängig und macht Spaß. Im Kern funktioniert Darkspore ganz ordentlich.
